Local
authorities have said a wildfire has destroyed four houses on the Greek
island of Evia, where a state of emergency has been declared.
The wildfire is being fanned by strong gales that have prevented firefighting aircraft from flying.
At least four smaller fires are burning on the south side of the island of Crete. One burned a rare palm forest.
Over 260 hectares of forest on the Croatian coast of the Adriatic Sea were destroyed on Sunday by three fires.
The largest fire broke out in near the town of Solin.
Due to the dense smoke, residents and tourists in Solin and Split were
warned not to go outside.
