Romania and Albania got entangled in diplomatic row triggered by an online newspaper and a hacker allegedly from Serbia.
Romanian news agency Mediafax says everything started with a non-confirmed news outlet posted by Italian news agency, claiming that Romanian President Traian Basescu seriously offended the Albanians making racist statements.
The insulting words "Albanians were lazy gypsies and garbage" were allegedly cited by Albanian and later by Kosovo's media.
Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Romanian ambassador in Tirana to provide an urgent explanation.
Finally, officials found that the imbroglio was masterminded by a hacker, allegedly from Serbia. Romanian diplomatic mission confirmed that the news agency was attacked by a Serbian hacker, who was infiltrating the news.
Diplomatic staff of Bucharest has confirmed that President Basescu did not attend any meeting and didn't made such statements.
Bucharest lodged a note of protest shortly afterwards, saying the country is disappointed at “the unusual attitude of Albanian foreign ministry.”
Romanian ambassador reiterated his country's position regarding Kosovo, noting that EU and NATO allies are familiar with Romania's stance on Kosovo.
