Two paintings, including a 1934 Picasso were smuggled out of Athens' National Gallery last night.
Yesterday marked the two paintings' last day on show
at an exhibition titled 'Unknown Treasures', featuring prints and
etchings by the likes of Duerer and Rembrandt.
A security officer at the gallery told police that
the alarm went off at 0500 hours local time and reported seeing a person
leave the building.
Ministry of Culture officials said the alarm went off
at the museum, which is in one of the best-guarded parts of the Greek
capital, but the thieves escaped undetected.
The art gallery was supposed to close on Monday for a
long period of construction, including building extensions and
refurbishment.
In the following days, the National Gallery will be hosting a painting exhibit of major artists in its special venue.
