A
launch of Macedonia's EU accession talks may not be postponed for ever
over the name issue, says Joseph Daul, Chairman of the European
People's Party Group at the EP.
"Several MEPs, including myself, have been working in
favor of obtaining an efficient discussion and real solution, as we
cannot indefinitely delay the (EU accession) negotiations... This (name)
matter must be settled at once," Daul told the Deutsche Welle.
Everything is up to the European Council, German MEP
Elmar Brok says, pointing out that EPP Group could only urge the two
governments (in Skopje and Athens) to find a solution and eliminate the
obstacle. Hence, the accession may be opened according to Macedonia's
progress, he added.
German MEP Jorgo Chatzimarkakis also believes that
Skopje and Athens are the once to settle the matter, which on numerous
occasions has been a subject of discussion of the EP Foreign Policy
Committee.
Macedonia must not be discouraged, says Slovene MEP Milan Zver.
Macedonia's enthusiasm, hope must not fade away, as
the ongoing reforms are favorable not only for joining the Union, but
also for the country itself, Zver says.
He believes that Macedonia should get a date for
commencing the EU accession talks, regardless of the name issue. The
drafting of a fresh EP resolution on Macedonia's progress is moving in
this direction. Once again MEPs are preparing to call for urgent start
of the country's (accession) negotiations, Zver says.
