Germany's
government wants to install a "budget commissioner," with the power to
veto budget choices by Athens, as a condition to a EUR 130 billion Greek
bailout, the Financial Times reported Friday, citing a copy of the
proposal.
The new commissioner, to be appointed by other
euro-zone finance ministers, would oversee "all major blocks of
expenditure" by Greece and veto budget decisions that weren't aligned
with international targets, the newspaper reported.
The German plan was circulated to finance ministry
officials from the so-called "euro working group," according to the
newspaper.
A senior Greek finance ministry official said Athens
was unaware of the proposal and couldn't comment while a German finance
ministry spokesman declined to comment, the newspaper said.
