A 2005 Chrysler 300C said to be the one Barack Obama drove before
becoming president failed to sell in an eBay auction that ended late
last night. As Driver’s Seat reported yesterday, the minimum bid was $1
million. The car drew zero bids.
The Chrysler’s apparent lack of appeal doesn’t necessarily reflect
poorly on the commander in chief. It is difficult to sell a mass-market
used car for a million dollars no matter who may have driven it. This
one, with gray paint and interior, was about as dull as a Hemi-powered
300C could be.
Sometimes old cars have fun-to-tell stories that link them to former
celebrity owners. There was the steering wheel rim on an ex-Elvis
Presley DeTomaso Pantera, damaged when the late singer reportedly shot
the car with a pistol after it failed to start. A Lamborghini Miura that
belonged to rocker Rod Stewart supposedly suffered a tear to its roof
lining from a woman’s high-heeled shoe.
But no such exciting or intimate tales accompany the Obama car. Apparently he simply drove the thing.
A spokesman for eBay said sellers sometimes resubmit cars at lower
prices or simply wait for the market to improve before re-running an
auction. In this case, November’s presidential election could affect the
Chrysler’s collectible status.
