While the entire corporate media was focused on the G8 Summit and the fact that Putin declined to go (he is busy improving economic ties with Eastern nations),  we paid attention to that other meeting, the NATO Summit in Chicago and wondered what will it bring... "will it be life or death if NATO ignores us once again".

There hasn't been an actual debate or anything sensical from a group of people who insist we will all burn in hell if we don't enter NATO. Our football teams will play on adjacent fields with square balls, our army will turn to using wooden sticks, the rain will stop falling, plants will stop converting CO2 to oxygen. All of this will happen if we don't enter NATO in Chicago. This group of Macedonians remind me of another idiot I know, Al Gore.

I am one, but thrilled to say one of increasing numbers of Macedonians who continually have said "NO" to NATO in every reasonable and possible way! Our challenge is that there is a large gap between my "NO to Nato" and the opinion of disappointed Macedonians who would be thrilled if for whatever reason we got into the organization today.

But since that won't happen anytime soon, these 'disappointed' Macedonians feel as unwanted lovers.  They will continue to feel this way until they stop giving love to someone that doesn't deserve it.

But Macedonia has much bigger problems. There is a minority who shows loyalty to everyone except their own country and the country has been run by spineless idiots for the last 20 years. The minority itself isn't necessarily a challenge. To me the most distressing issue is that multiple Governments are negotiating our name with a country who spent billions just so Macedonia doesn't exist.  This to me is a sign of Government who disrespects its citizens, therefore isn't able to get respect abroad, and it shows ... Bucharest, Chicago, tomorrow it will be another city, and another.

The only thing I can say to the Macedonian Goverment is this - Grow a Pair of Balls, for once! Bring the soldiers home, cut off negotiations with Greece this second, as there is no "Agreement" between the two countries, there never was.

NATO Membership, what is it?

I have yet to see a Macedonian politician who has explained what does a "Membership in NATO" entail? No one has explained to the populace what it means to be a member of NATO -

I for one would like to know how much does it cost to be a member? Second question is how many future wars do we have to start (Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Lybia, Yemen... Iran).

I can also see the benefits - corporate media will tell us "NATO" soldiers committed crimes against civilians and we don't have to worry about it because it's probably someone else.

I have yet to see a Macedonian politician or a political party come up with Plan A, B, C, D when it comes to national security. In a manner of careless gambler on the verge of losing everything, we are placing all our money on NATO/EU as the only alternative! The biggest novice gambler at a Trump run casino would never put all of his money on a single bet, we shouldn't either.

While Macedonians keep themselves busy with NATO, other things are happening. As the UK's Independent put it 'impotent leaders are meeting in Chicago and a military base at Camp David, surrounded by thousands of cops, armed aerial drones flying over, snipers etc. where the main topic of discussion is "capitalism at crossroads". Western leaders are discussing how to survive the crisis without changing the system that manufactures the crisis! Clever, indeed.

The fact NATO and the US invited 60 nations to take part at the Summit in Chicago, says it all "We need everyone's help for the mess we made in Afghanistan". NATO has only 28 members.

Meanwhile Macedonia continues to be encouraged by NATO to send more troops, particularly now that NATO members are facing financial collapse, our soldiers continue to get medals and our Government officials continue to be proud with those medals.

Macedonian politicians should answer what will Macedonia do with NATO and EU facing a financial collapse, neighbor Greece breathing on life support.  A prostitute will not enter a car when the driver says "I got no money". Why is Macedonia attempting to enter financially bankrupt and morally corrupt organizations?

Mak politicians are saying we deserve better, adding that we don't want to be warming up NATO's bench! I could be naive, but I believe it's better to sit out some (in this case ALL) games than lose soldiers on foreign lands because of someone's empirical designs.

Macedonia has enjoyed great relations with NATO thus far, particularly in 2001 in Aracinovo. Thanks, but No thanks!

I always wondered how did Swedes and the Swiss sleep at night? Both nations are not in NATO.  How do they survive each day without NATO... it's a miracle! //Gorazd Velkovski

A Plan B
We Macedonians need to be really careful about Turkey.

The Turks brutally occupied us for over 500 years, pitting us against Christian neighboring countries, introducing rebellious Muslims in our lands, raping our beautiful women and beheading our revolutionary heroes.

They still commit genocides and grave abuses against fellow Christians within their borders.

Our Plan B should be warming up to the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). The Western countries are going to tear us apart, if we continue letting them.

Our best option is of course uniting our divided nation and doing all we can do to strengthen Macedonia.

true
PhD is right. Milosevich made a pact with Mitsotakis. Serbia took all the weapons away from Macedonia (50 MIGs, 400 Tanks, every imaginable gun, bullets including the door knobs from military buildings), and Greece was suppose to enter from the South.

It was the perfect plan, one takes all the guns away, the other goes in. Serbia was scheduled to enter from the North as a "mediator" and split the country in two.

The Turks paid close attention to the whole deal and silently let Belgrade and Athens know what's in store.

Turkey is the regional power by far and quite simply decides what's happening in the Balkans, this includes in Greece as well.

forgetting something?
Peter,
My understanding is that Macedonia and Turkey have had a "military agreement" for a while.

In fact, it is this agreement that prevented Greece and Milosevic from entering Macedonia. Greece had 40,000 troops 8km from the border in 1992. However a little note came from Ankara "You enter Macedonia, we'll take Athens".

Because they couldn't do it with military, Athens created the never ending "name problem" whose original goal was to prevent Macedonia from becoming a country.

The reason
Because Macedonia has no true allies. Which country will help our loved Macedonia. It has failed to build strong ties with any other country and it's trying to change that. My preference is to also turn our back on NATO and partner militarily with Russia, China and Turkey. Partner with the Swiss for other democratic matters that will help our economy. I'm not suggesting any undemocratic authoritarian approach.
