Macedonia in the international Internet space is represented with .mk.

For domestic use, readers decided to pick the Cyrillic domain .мкд, shows an online poll by the Macedonian Academic Research Network (MARnet) published on its website.

The voting ended on 15 January 2013. Several proposals, including .мкд, .мак, .македонија, .рмкд, .рм and .рмак, were offered in the poll. 72.98% out of a total of 2,288 citizens deemed that .мкд should be used as a domain.

The winning domain will be submitted to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as an official request for launching the process of obtaining a Cyrillic domain for Macedonia.

"The national Cyrillic domain will enable the citizens in Macedonia to use the Internet in their Cyrillic alphabet in an effort to preserve the national identity by using domains in Macedonian language," reads a press release by the Ministry of Information Society and Administration.
