Registration of Macedonian Cyrillic Websites Now Available
Wednesday, 14 January 2015

As of Wednesday, Macedonian Cyrillic websites using national domain .мкд, including specific letters љ, њ, ѓ, ж, ч, ш and џ are available at the Internet.

Minister of Information Society and Administration Ivo Ivanovski and Culture Minister Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska said the .мкд domain is registered in the international Internet space, thus making Macedonia the fifth country to establish a national Cyrillic domain after Russia, Serbia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

The first Cyrillic website влада.мкд has already been launched.

"We have made a huge step in the strengthening, maintenance and affirmation of our language and alphabet. We have managed to win another battle on the international stage, which required hard work, patience and lobbying by all parties involved in the process", said Ivanovski at today's press conference.

Kanceska-Milevska said the Cyrillic domain .мкд is especially important for the young population, who is alienated from the standardized Macedonian language and the Cyrillic letter on a daily basis.

"Introduction of domain .мкд will spontaneously impose the return of the Macedonian word in everyday use, but also in all walks of life", she added.

The system used for management of Latin domains is currently adapted to the Cyrillic. In addition, Macedonian state institutions and agencies are making reservations of the Cyrillic domains.

The Macedonian Academic Research Network (MARnet) led the project of obtaining a national Cyrillic domain.
