Court Postpones Zaev's Corruption Trial for the 8th time
Tuesday, 20 December 2016

The Criminal Court in Skopje decided on Tuesday to postpone its hearing, for the eighth time, in a case against SDSM party leader Zoran Zaev, over his alleged corruption as Mayor of Strumica.

Zaev was absent from the hearing, so the judge said that the next hearing will be held in about a month. He is charged of asking a businessman to give him a bribe in order to be able to purchase publicly owned land near Strumica. Zaev was videotaped by the businessman in a court approved surveillance measure and the tapes which leaked to the public showed him asking the businessman to leave one euro for each square meter to his brother Vice and another "to the church", likely a code for the SDSM party.

Zaev's defense team asked that the prosecutor Vladimir Miloshevski is withdrawn, a request with the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime and Corruption refused. Zaev's team filed charges against the prosecutor for violations in his work and for the use of the special surveillance measures.

The difference between an ordinary Macedonian citizen and SDSM's Zoran Zaev is that if you don't show up in Court for a hearing, a police van will track you down and bring you to Court. No police van for Zaev.
