Snow, freezing weather brings traffic to a standstill across Macedonia

Snow cover in Macedonia by 1 p.m. was the highest in Mavrovi Anovi (25 centimeters of snow), followed by Pozarane (19 cm), Tetovo (18 cm), Lazaropole (12 cm), and Zajcev Rid near Skopje (8 cm), according to the weather service.

A ban has been imposed for heavy cargo vehicles on Gostivar-Kicevo road via the mountain slope of Straza and on the road linking Mavrovo and Debar due to snowfalls.

Transportation on state roads across the country is being carried out amid winder conditions on wet roads, the Auto-Motto Association of Macedonia (AMSM) has reported. Drivers are advised to adjust car speed according to conditions on the road.

Snowfalls has also hindered city and inter-city transport with no major delays reported. Air transport is also taking place smoothly at airports as planes are departing and landing as scheduled.

More snow is forecast to fall later in the day, the Hydro-Meteorological Service of Macedonia has said. Snow cover of 50 cm is expected on mountains with at least 10-20 cm of snow in lower areas. Temperature is expected to range from 0C to 8C.

Much of the capital Skopje is also covered in snow with snowfalls expected to intensify by the end of the day. Temperature will vary around zero degrees.

With forecasts of plummeting temperatures and snowfalls across the country, the crisis management body is advising travelers to be careful when planning trips, not to embark on trips if unnecessary and if so, to carry winter equipment at all times.
