Macedonian FM brushes aside Greek claims of 'irredentism'

The Macedonian Foreign Affairs Ministry dismissed recent comments from Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, who blamed Macedonia for irredentism. Speaking at an event organized by the Greek Chamber of Commerce, Kotzias said that Macedonia can't become a member of the European Union so long as it pursues "irredentist positions" toward Greece on the name issue.

"There is no reason that Greece should be worried about 'Macedonian irredentism'. Greece is pushing this talking point in an attempt to draw attention away from her blockade of the Macedonian process of Euro-Atlantic integration, especially after the verdict of the International Court of Justice in 2011. On our part, we believe that we need to find solutions to all reasons of distrust in the process of the confidence building dialogue. Irredentism is not a characteristic of Macedonia, which has continuously promoted regional dialogue. We believe that our southern neighbor should adopt the same approach", the Foreign Ministry responded.
