Macedonian customs agents seized seven kilograms of heroin from a vehicle of a Serbian citizen who tried to enter the country from Greece through the Gevgelija Bogorodica border crossing.

The drugs were seized on Saturday. According to the Customs Agency, the driver said that he purchased the heroin in Istanbul and was taking it to the Serbian city of Novi Pazar. He taped the drugs under the car battery, as well as under a spare battery he kept in the trunk.

The Balkans lie on one of the main routes for smuggling heroin to Europe, with Afghan poppies being processed mostly in Turkey and then driven to the Western European markets.
