Russia rushes food and medicine to Deir Ezzor
Thursday, 07 September 2017

For the first time since 2014, tons of food and medicine is now entering Deir Ezzor city through lorries and not airdrops, thanks to a massive initiative by the Russian state.

“The humanitarian aid convoy dispatched by the Russian reconciliation center is carrying water purification stations, mobile diesel generators, bottled drinking water, food packages and medicines,” the ministry said following the establishment of a supply line that runs from the government mainland in western Syria through the M7-highway to Deir Ezzor.

However, Russian medical crews are yet to enter Deir Ezzor due to safety concerns over the narrow supply line that remains vulnerable to ISIS attacks. The Russian ministry nevertheless stressed that medics would deliver care to the city’s beleaguered residents soon.

With military operations underway to expand the Deir Ezzor supply route and break the ongoing siege of its airbase, Damascus and Moscow must also seek measurements to restore the city’s largely destroyed infrastructure.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, all electrical substations and water pumping stations have been destroyed by ISIS. Jihadists have also demolished most of the city’s hospitals, schools and social facilities, the Kremlin noted.
