The
Greek position is unacceptable, because an accord was signed, which
stipulates that the name dispute is not an obstacle Macedonia to become
a member of international organisations.
I think that EU and NATO must
try to exert influence on Greece in order a compromise to be reached
ultimately, stated Angelika Beer, German MEP in the Greens/EFA party,
on Wednesday in Skopje.
The Euro-MEP added that a compromise must be made
and to be proved to the Macedonians that also in the future they would
remain Macedonians.
- According to the European Parliament, the
discussion involving the name issue should be toned down and a solution
to be found on two issues - a date for start of EU membership talks and
an agreement to be reached for NATO membership, which is equally
important, stated Beer. She said that her party's stance was that
Macedonia should obtain date for entry talks this year, despite the
problems it faced during the early parliamentary elections. MEP Beer
deemed the civil society and Macedonia in general should be given a
signal that it was part of EU.
Asked whether the Parliament should discuss the name
issue, Beer said the matter should be openly discussed in order a joint
solution and compromise to be found. - It is good the MPs to debate
the issues about the name and the referendum.
Beer noted she held excellent talks on Wednesday
with Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki and with MPs
Aleksandar Nikolovski, Tito Petkovski and Xhevad Ademi - members of the
National EU Integration Council - as well as with DUI leader Ali Ahmeti.
After meeting with Beer, Ahmeti said she wanted to
hear DUI's stance on the matter and on the constitutional changes
regarding the presidential elections and the changes to the Electoral
Code. - We support Macedonia's constitutional name, but in the meantime
we want to join EU and NATO, stated Ahmeti.
