Italian Embassy: Italy did not support Greece PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 04 April 2008
"The position of Italy was for all three countries of the Adriatic Charter to enter NATO. This has been Italy's position from the very begining and had been repeated numerous times by Prime Minister Romano Prodi". says in the press release issued by the Italian Embassy, after Greek papers claimed Italy supported Greece.

Greek papers "Ethnos" and "Naftemboriki" had issued reports Greece had been supported by Italy, Spain and France. This is false. Spain, Italy and France were against veto, none of the three countries issued a veto! The Greek Media listed the three countries because they are viewed as 'traditionally' close to Greece, that way it wouldn't look alone and isolated in its quest. It's the "we are not alone" statement to put the Greek poplation at ease. The reaction from the Italian embassy clearly shows that.

The image of a hand shake, smile and embrace by Sarkozy with Bakoyannis and Karamanlis was superimposed on the Front Page of every Greek paper with the headlines, "France is on our side" when in fact, France was also against the veto.
