Greece has invited Macedonia to follow-up
negotiations on name differences under the auspices of the United Nations.
In the speech at a conference organized by Ecomist magazine, Greek Prime
Minister Costas Karamanlis said "Skopje should accept the invitation to
dialogue with a view to European future of the country, not with a view to Balkans'
past".
Karamanlis stressed the solution must be a compromise name that would be mutually
acceptable. A solution in which there will be no winners and no losers.
He called for a solution that "will not be able to be used as a vehicle
for historically inaccurate and irredentist logic".
He described the Greek decision to veto Macedonia's NATO entry as "an
act of responsibility and credibility".
Addressing the Economist conference, the Foreign Minister Dora
Bakoyannis said Athens is ready to continue the talks with Skopje as
soon as
possible
